Fusing indie and alt rock with a nod to power pop, Exploding Violets is here to deliver messages of love, acceptance, and outrage. Our name was inspired by queer history, since violets have long been used to represent lesbians. And in nature, violets slowly explode to spread their seeds into the world.
NIX GRAY
SHE/THEY
LEAD VOCALIST + SONGWRITING
Nix has been experimenting with music her entire life. She took a long hiatus, spent focused on parenting and creating graphic art, but she felt inspired to return to musical storytelling by her favorite band Sleater-Kinney. Nix now writes songs about her experiences in relationships and societal issues she’s passionate about. She also enjoys working on creative projects with her kid, hanging out with her cats, and watching sci-fi.
ELISE ETHERTON
SHE/HIM/THEY
GUITAR + HARMONY + RECORDING
With a degree in music education and career in audio engineering, Elise is constantly overriding completely irrational perfectionism. Exploding Violets is the moment where she can let all that loose.
When not onstage you can find Elise recording performances at UT Austin’s Butler School of Music, enjoying improv comedy, screaming into the void, and woodworking.
ANDREA LAGRONE
SHE/HER
DRUMS
As a California native/naturalized Texan, Andrea grew up in a small, conservative suburb of Dallas and got to Austin as soon as she could. Involved in church choir, piano, and concert band from a young age, Andrea was raised on the power of music. While spending her teen years in marching band and drum line, she started a garage band and that was the beginning of her love affair of writing and playing original rock music with like-minded musicians. After living and gigging in Dallas, Austin, then NYC, Andrea returned home to Austin and has been a regular part of Austin’s post-punk music scene for several years. Now, joining Exploding Violets, she is ready to unite her passions for playing music and fighting the patriarchy. When not hitting the skins, Andrea can be found laughing with her wife, eating all the chips and salsa in her path, enjoying nature, and working to fuel the fire of social justice and the arts in her kids.
